Eldor Gathman, resident and native of Napoleon, Ohio maintained his painting studio at 724 1/2 North Perry in that city. His art training includes two years of study under T. J. Keane, former Dean of the Chicago Art Institute, and further work under C. Curry Bohm of Brown County, Indiana, Harry Ballinger, Don Stone and Paul Strisick in Rockport, Massachusetts; Emille A. Gruppe, Gloucster, Massachusetts and Karl Kappes, Toledo, Ohio.

Mr. Gathman’s work is will known because of his sensitive and capable handling of the myriad moods of Nature, primarily in oil. However, he was also a master of watercolor. His annual trips for over twenty years to the East Coast as well as local scenes along the Maumee River have supplied him with a wide range of subject matter to be developed in his studio.

For close to 50 years, Eldor Gathman has exhibited in numerous group and one-man shows at Adrian College, the Toledo Art Museum, the Toledo Flower Show, Wassenberg Art Center, Van Wert, Ohio, Montpelier Fine Arts Exhibition, Toledo Edison Company in Toledo and Wauseon, the Napoleon Library, the Defiance Society of Artists, and others.

The artist has been the recipient of over thirty awards, including a Purchase Award, Toledo Art Museum, and he is represented in many private art collections in various parts of the United States. He was a charter member of The Toldeo Artists’ Club and an honorary member of The Napoleon Art League.  In 2007 Eldor Gathman was posthumouosly inducted into the Napoleon High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.  He was also a charter member of the Henry County Historical Society. Mr. Gathman’s artistic ability created much pleasure and beauty both for himslef and for the benefit of others.  After his death in 1987, his works of art have only become more valuable.
